Surgical Face Masks Glossary

Berkley Surgical Company has created a glossary of terms to help you become better acquainted with surgical face mask and face shield terminology and definitions. We hope you will find this information both educational and useful. Please feel free to contact us if you have additional questions or comments.

Barrier

The materials used to cover the face. The barrier most commonly consists of 3 plies; interfacing, filter and outerfacing. The interfacing must comply with ISO 10993-1 and be comfortable to the skin. The filter is generally polypropylene melt-blown and provides the greatest part of the protection. The outerfacing provides additional protection, covers the filter to prevent dusting and provides color and style. The barrier must meet FDA requirements of 95% to 100% B.F.E. at 3.0 microns and be less than 5.0 Delta P for breathing. Barriers that claim fluid protection compliance with ASTM 2100 must be tested to ASTM F.1862.

BFE (Bacterial Filtration Efficiency %)

The efficiency at which the facemask barrier prevents aerosolized bacteria penetration at a given flow rate.

PFE (Particle Filtration Efficiency %)

The efficiency at which the facemask barrier prevents aerosolized particle penetration at a given flow rate.

Delta P (Δ P)

The pressure drop across the facemask barrier that occurs when simulating human breathing and is measured in mm H2O / CM2 at a given flow rate.

Fluid Protection

The resistance of the facemask barrier to fluid impact penetration as rated at pressures and flow rates simulating the human body. The ASTM F 1862 test has 3 levels of protection; 80mm, 120mm, and 160mm.

Procedure Facemask

A facemask with ear loops.

Surgical Facemask

A facemask with tie strings.

N95 Facemask

A facemask that provides a leak-proof facial fit and meets the barrier requirements of NIOSH and FDA.

Anti-Fog Adhesive Tape

A medical grade foam that conforms to the wearer to minimize warm, humid exhaled breath from fogging eye wear.

Anti-Fog Film

An EMA film that forms a vapor seal that prevents warm, humid exhaled breath from fogging eye wear.

Eyeshield

An optical quality plastic visor that is attached to fluid protection facemasks to prevent fluids from contacting the wearer’s eyes.

Anti-Glare Strip

A dark colored strip at the top of the facemask that removes glare from the eyeshield.
